Amsterdam’s history
Amsterdam started with 1 church, which was built in 1300. They started to built all kinds of buildings and rivers around that church. The city gained town rights around 1300.
Amsterdam has become rich due beer and herring. These two products were important for the economic grow of Amsterdam. Due this economic grow Amsterdam has become Holland’s biggest city. Because ships could reach Amsterdam very easily, grew the economic grow faster and faster.
The Golden Century was very important for Amsterdam. It has brought wealth, power, culture and tolerance in the city. A few influential painters of this century lived in Amsterdam. For example: Rembrandt van Rijn. An important painting of him still hangs in Amsterdam: The Nachtwacht.
In the 17th Century Amsterdam has gotten 2 extreme extensions. The “Grachtengordel” and the “Jordaan” are an important component of this.
In 1901 a new law was introdused. This law had to take care of the livings circumstances.
The bad circumstances were traded for new, and better houses. Amsterdam got another extension.
They made a small airport called “Schiphol” and at the south-west side of the city was built a forest.
The 2nd world war didnt make much damage to Amsterdam, Although the city lost 10% of his inhabitants due the hunger winter and persecution of the jews. For wood the inhabitants destroyed the empty, most jewish houses.
In February 1941 there was a big strike. This was because of the german occupation. People had to work longer but the payments decreased. Jewish people were limited in almost everything. They weren’t able to enter restaurants, swimming pools and that kind of stuff. The owners of these accommodations didn’t agree with this. Fights between Dutch- and German people started because of this. This got out of hand on 11 February. A huge fight was formed, and one of Hitler’s followers got badly injured and died later.
On 22 and 23 February the German’s had a man-hunt. With a lot of violence they grabbed Jewish man and send them into concentration camps. The Amsterdammers were really angry about this, so they went to strike. The strike started in Amsterdam, but it reached other places in Netherland soon after that. In the begin the German’s didn’t understand what was happening, but when they realized it was a strike they reacted with even more violence then they had used before. Many people died. We still have a remembrance of this terrible happening. This is kept at “De Dokwerker” monument in Amsterdam. The so called "Februari Staking", which means February strike, has been put onto the white screen in the movie "De Ijssalon".
On 7 may the “freedom’s day” was celebrated.
After the war the city had to recover her 2 most importants prosperity sources; the port and Schiphol. After this Schiphol grew extremely hard.
After 1985 alot of young people move to Amsterdam. Especially because there are alot of universities. Now Amsterdam is an real “young people city”.
Also Amsterdam is very reachable due its rails and canals.
Amsterdam is due its historic centrum and innumberable monuments, Musea, policy on drugs, the “wallen” a beloved city.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
Amsterdam airport Schiphol is the biggest Dutch airport. In Dutch we call it: ` luchthaven schiphol’ or only Schiphol. Schiphol is the most important airport of Europe. At the moment Schiphol is concerning passenger number the number 13 of the world.
Schiphol is the home port of the Dutch airline companies such as KLM, Martinair, ArkeFly and Transavia.com.
The history of ship schiphol:
In April 1996 the minister of war gave permission for the purchase of a piece ground in the neighbourhood of the Fort Schiphol. This piece ground was meant for an military airport. In august of that year the 16.5 hectare ground was suitable for an airport. On 19 September of that same year, 3 planes of the LVA landed on Schiphol. And as from then was it official. Schiphol was a military airport. The piece of ground appeared to be too small and during the first world war pieces ground were added and prepared for use. At the end of the first world war Schiphol had grown to 76 hectares.
The number of passengers increased. So Schiphol’s activities increased also, More and more companies were placed on Schiphol, the number of passengers kept rising and even some shops came to Schiphol. Because of this Schiphol got a lack of space, so they expanded again. Schiphol started with one track. Now they have 6.
Schiphol also has a mall. Its called “Schiphol Plaza”. There are a lot of shops and you can buy different kinds of stuff. Like flowers, candy, daily purchasing, electronica, clothing, books and cosmethics. But there’s more. Schiphol Plaza has many restaurants, bars and fastfood-restaurants. The shops are opened from 7 AM till 10 PM, some are even open for 24 hours!
Next to “Schiphol Plaza” Schiphol has something what no other airport has; his own railway-connection. So besides auto and bus, you can reach Schiphol also by train.
Schiphol has won more than 120 prizes over the years. It was honored with the title of "Best European Airport". Also Schiphol won the title of "Best Business Travel Airport". This is not only because of its usually perfectly organized operations, but also because of its high number of international and intercontinental flights. Netherland is very proud of Schiphol. That’s why we told you something about it!
The royal house.
In 1815 Netherland became a kingdom. Since then Netherland has had 3 kings and 4 queens as head of the state. The head of the royal house is called a king, even if it’s a female. That’s why prince Claus, Beatrix husband who died, ain’t called a king. However, if Willem Alexander gets to be king, we are able to call Maxima a queen.
The law says the kingdom has to give the royal family 3 palaces. These are: Paleis Noordeinde, Paleis Huis ten Bosch and Paleis op de Dam. Paleis op de Dam is placed in the center of Amsterdam. It is the palace where the queen welcomes her importantst guests.
It’s used for official opportunities and visits from abroad. That’s why this palace, which is located in Amsterdam,is very important.
The Kalverstraat
The Kalverstraat is the greatest shopping street in Amsterdam.
The Kalverstraat is placed in the centrum of Amsterdam. The street begins at The Dam, And ends at the "munttoren". The easiest access will definitely be by public transport since parking spaces in the city center are rare and expensive.
The most familiar street of The Netherlands already exists for more than six hundred years. At least, the oldest document in which the name ‘die Calverstraete’ is mentioned, dates from the fourth of January 1393. The name of the street refers to the lively business in cows, oxes and calves which took place in the street until 1629. After the disappearance of the cattle-market, the Kalverstraat turned into a stylish shopping street. On 7 may 1945 people were celebrating the freedom after 5 years of supression in the Kalverstraat. Around 1 PM drunk german soldiers came out "the great club" and started shooting. 20 people died and 119 got injured. Up until about thirty years ago the street was not only familiar because of the shops, but also well known as a street full of lunchrooms, restaurants, hotels and cinema’s.
And offcourse we cannot forget that The Kalverstraat is the expensivest street on the dutch Monopoly!

Modern Amsterdam
Holland is also famous because in Holland you can legally use drugs and go to prostitutes. Lets see if it is true to say that Holland is the country of drugs and prostitutes.
The drugs in Holland,
In Holland we make difference to hard- and soft drugs. Soft drugs is not more dangerous then alcohol and cigarettes. Alcohol and cigarettes are legal so the soft drugs is also legal. In coffeeshops can the costumer buy some drugs, but not to much only 5 gram. We have about 800 coffeeshops in Holland.
In a lot of country’s are you a criminal when you use hard drugs, but in Holland we see you as a patient, and we try everything to get you of the hard drugs.
I think it is clear now that in Holland we’re not austere of using drugs. We have a lot of drugs tourism in this country, because not every country has the same way of thinking about drugs.
The prostitution in Holland,
In Holland we have a big prostitution market. In Amsterdam we have a place that called: the Wallen. The Wallen are some streets with prostitutes behind the windows. The prostitute is not wearing a lot of clothes when she sitting behind the windows, and they are sitting in red light. The prostitutes tries to attract the mans that are walking across the streets, and they hope that the man comes to her, so that she can make money with giving him sex.
But not every prostitute sitting behind the windows because she want to do that. 90 % of the prostitutes is there because a boy says to them that the have to make money for him. In Holland we call that boys: loverboys. A loverboy pick one girl that look a little bit naïve, and they acting really nice to the girls and giving them presents. But when the boys think that the girl does everything for him then he compel the girls to work as a prostitute. Loverboys are a big problem for Holland, but I’m not shore if this problem ever will be dissolve, but I hope it.
When you walk now across the streets of the Wallen you see a lot of empty windows, and a lot of windows with no renter. Maybe the Wallen will be closed in a couple of years.
